Terms, section 3

3. Using the Site

You may view and use the Site for personal, educational and classroom purposes. Teachers and students may show it in class and use screenshots in coursework and presentations, as long as they credit “The Wheeler Atlas, thewheeleratlas.com”.

Videos and screenshots. You may screen-record the atlas, including in cinematic mode, and you may use the built-in Save image (a 1080p or 4K PNG). You may use those recordings and saved images in your own videos and posts, including monetised ones such as YouTube videos, as long as the burned-in watermark or credit stays visible (the on-screen thewheeleratlas.com mark in a recording, or the credit bar on a saved image) or you credit “The Wheeler Atlas (thewheeleratlas.com)” in the video, the post or its description. You may not sell the recordings or saved images as stock footage or present the map as your own product.

You agree not to:

  • disrupt, overload or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Site or the systems that host it;
  • scrape or bulk-download the Site by automated means, except as the data licenses below allow;
  • remove or obscure copyright, license or attribution notices, or the watermark or credit burned into a recording or a saved image;
  • present the Site or its content as your own product, or imply that we endorse you or your work;
  • interfere with any advertising shown on the Site;
  • use the Site in a way that breaks the law.

The phrase “the data licenses below” points at section 4 of the Terms, which is not repeated here.

The credit line

If the on-screen mark or the credit bar is not visible, use this line in the video, the post or its description:

The Wheeler Atlas (thewheeleratlas.com)

For class and coursework the Terms use: “The Wheeler Atlas, thewheeleratlas.com”.

Record cinematic mode

Open the map and set the year and place. Press the cinematic button in the title bar, or press H. The panels hide, and the address thewheeleratlas.com stays on the map. Record your screen. Press H or Esc to leave. On a phone, tap the map and use Exit cinematic. Y shows or hides the year caption. Space plays through the eras, and [ and ] step between them.

Save a 1080p or 4K image

Press Save in the title bar, then choose 1080p or 4K. The atlas downloads a PNG of the current view. A credit bar is part of that image. Keep the bar, or add the credit line above where you post it.

Copy a link to this view

Press Share. The link opens the same year, map mode and place. A year in the common era looks like /#y=1200&m=era&at=31.00,35.00&z=2.40. A year BCE uses y=bc and the year, as in y=bc2560. at is latitude, then longitude. z is the zoom.

What is not allowed

Please don’t sell recordings or saved images as stock footage, present the map as your own product, or remove the watermark or the credit.

Making AI history videos

Use real map shots for the moments where geography matters, and check your generated scenes against the map of that year. Label AI reconstructions as reconstructions. The same credit rules above still apply.
